Below is the story of how Kevin, Casey's husband, first experienced "Casey's Song."
It was on the highway—having just left my wife at the hospital—
that I got his text about “Casey’s Song.”
Robbie shot me an ad hoc version of what he had recorded straight
from just his acoustic and solo voice. “Tell me what you think,” he texted, “I
hope I wasn’t inappropriate, or taking it too far.”
So there I am on the highway, with no better warning of the grit and
battle he had put into this little piece about my wife, %ghting against
Leukemia for her life. I press Play, and I hear him sing Casey’s song. While
barreling down the highway. Weeping while driving is not recommended.
But then I get the song over to Casey. There in her hospital room she
covers her jaws with her hands, )ushes red, and %lls her face with tears.
“This…. is for meeeee?!” She is overcome, because the song is a mighty
outlet, a verse that agrees with all the realest things that were going on her
life right then: how her being famous for loving “rainbows” was giving
hundreds around the world a thing to talk to her about; how the welfare of
her newest child, “Delilah,” was of greatest concern because “mama” was
now gone; and how “poison in her blood” was the blunt fact she must now
confront—as blunt as her literalistic 7-year old Elijah who walked in on day-1
and blurted out that critical question, “Mom are you going to die?”
“Inappropriate?” Moving towards it, maybe, and just perfectly. When
they hear it, her kids are proud of the song, because the song itself is proud
of their mama, and this song is not kidding around. I get to watch Casey
listen to it, and when she does, I get to watch her zero in on what is already
true. Have you ever seen a person who is way-low on blood, receive a
transfusion? It is remarkable—the better color sets in immediately, the face
brightens, the spirit rises. The bene%t of receiving that gift is accomplished
right away, literally, and you witness that person’s transformation before your
very eyes.
And so it is, that I enjoy watching Casey hear her song. Which is a
perfect match.
